READING WORKSHOP
Each day during Reading Workshop we hope to have students spend 30 minutes with eyes on the page, reading a book that is at an appropriate level, a "Just Right/Good Fit Book". In addition to the time spent in the classroom students are expected to spend 140 minutes a week reading at home. During independent reading time students practice strategies that have been modeled during mini-lessons and read-aloud.
Students have an opportunity to choose books to read from our classroom library and the school library. Once a week students have a chance to recommend books to classmates and then go "book shopping", with the goal of having enough books to last the week. As children shop I suggest books and steer them towards books that are at their reading level. You can identify books by guided reading level if you visit Scholastic Book Wizard. I ask that students carry the book they are reading from home to school so that only one book is being read at a time.
During Reading Workshop this year we will be following the Lucy Calkins Reading Units of Study. There will be four units used including: Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story, Reading the Weather, Reading the World: Purposeful Reading of Nonfiction, Reading History: The American Revolution and Historical Fiction Book Clubs.
